How does a flag subscription work? Our scouts will deliver and set up your flag a few days prior to the designated holiday. Scouts will then return after the holiday to retrieve the flag. We take care of everything from storage to maintenance and upkeep. Scouts earn money from the subscription for each flag they place each holiday, and they choose how many flags they want to cover each holiday. They can use this money for anything scouting related - from personal equipment like hiking boots or backpacks, to trip costs such as summer camp or High Adventure (Philmont, BWCA, Sea Base, etc.). Flags are 3′ x 5′ and attached to a 7′ pole. At the start of the subscription, we come by and place a "flag spike" in the grass (about 2' in from the curb and 2' away from the driveway when possible) which allows the pole to placed and removed easily while limiting damage the pole or the yard through repeatedly trying to force it directly into a new hole each time. This "spike" is a white tube that we insert into the ground and sits flush with the dirt, allowing it to remain year-round without fear of moving over it. Occasionally a section of the flag will get damaged while on display. If it is severe, please let us know via the contact form. Otherwise we'll note it at pickup and make the necessary repairs or replacements. Please note, this is a flag subscription service; you are not purchasing the flag or pole itself.

How long will the flags be out?We work hard to get the flags up a day or two before the holiday and take them down a day or two after the holiday. The exact day will vary from scout to scout. Some holidays are close together and we leave the flags out for them (Example: Labor Day & Patriot Day-9/11). Also, to preserve our flags we cannot store them wet, so we may leave them out for an extra day or so for them to dry fully. We do our best to manage around weather, but our first concern is the safety of those delivering the flags. If it is too dangerous to deliver or pick up the flags there may be a delay or, on a rare occasion, we may have to skip a day.

My neighbors have their flags, why don't I have mine?So long as the day is prior to the holiday itself, this is not uncommon but there's nothing to worry about. We divide up our subscriptions and assign them to different scouts. We try to assign the scouts flags in the same geographical area, but occasionally more than one scout services the same area. Sometimes even the same street. Our scouts have different personal schedules (school and sports often limit their availability), so we give them a short date range to post and remove flags. This means that occasionally one scout will have placed their flags on day X while the scout servicing the house next door had to wait until day Y.
-
How are the flags handled? The scouts are required to follow all flag codes and handle the flags respectfully. This program is a great opportunity for them to practice flag etiquette. When not in use they are stored properly in a safe location after inspection.

Does my flag need a to be illuminated at night? As for lighting- we consulted an expert (and former military honor guard) on the flag code and received the following information: "The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset except when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day. For example, the week of a national holiday. Flags can remain outdoors during rain and other inclement weather, so long as the flag is an all-weather flag. Proper illumination simply means having a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag so it is recognizable by the casual observer. A streetlight or ambient lighting is sufficient. The purpose of this rule is that the flag be distinguishable from another flag, such as a sports team flag. The important thing is to make sure the flags are in good condition." Of course, you are welcome to add additional lighting to your flag if you so desire.
